Energy Psychology: How Can it Help You?

Energy Psychology is a new change paradigm! What exactly does that mean and why would you want to know about it?

About 10 years ago I heard the well known medical intuitive, Carolyn Myss, author of, Why People Don’t Heal and How They Can, doing a TV special on PBS. She passionately stated that one of our greatest challenges will be in managing our body’s energy. I didn’t have a clue what she meant by that statement but over the years I’ve come to gain an understanding of the incredible importance of her ideas.

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that we cannot depend on medical science to help to keep us physically and mentally well. While both Medicine and Psychiatry have there very specific and useful roles in society, it’s really up to the individual to manage their own bodies and minds to maintain good health. But how do we do this? We are certainly not taught how to care for self at this level. Through physical challenges of my own I was forced to find ways to help myself.

The new field of psychology called Energy Psychology, has developed new strategies for calming or energizing the body/mind as required. Techniques have been developed to clear our systems of negative influences which are so abundant in today’s world. For more information on the professional development of this field please visit, www.energypsych.org.

Although the field of Energy Psychology is new, the basic premises on which it is built are ancient. All we are really doing is allowing old knowledge to be remembered and utilized. Most of the new Energy Psychology techniques are based on the Chinese Meridian Acupuncture Energy System, the Yoga Chakra System, or the Energy Biofield which surrounds the body.

I experimented with these new techniques personally because I felt that conventional counselling was not effective enough. The rate of change is drastically increased when the body is involved in the change process. When you stop to think about it, both un-resourceful emotions as well as physical problems, are experienced in the body itself and not in the mind. So it really made sense to me to include the body in treatment of emotional issues.

While the mind is a powerful tool, we cannot continue to separate the mind and body as we have historically. Research now shows that there is really no separation between the two. Consider for a moment the following quote by Dr. Deepak Chopra.

Our cells are constantly eavesdropping on our thoughts and being changed by them. A bout of depression can wreak havoc with the immune system; falling in love can boost it. Despair and helplessness raise the risk of heart attacks and cancer, thereby shortening life. Joy and fulfillment keep us healthy and extend life. This means that the line between biology and psychology can't really be drawn with any certainty. A remembered stress, which is only a wisp of thought, releases the same flood of destructive hormones as the stress itself.

Body/Mind is a highly integrated system and change technologies which use both perspectives will simply be more powerful. And people can be empowered to use new techniques to manage their own emotional energy thus having great influence over their health.

Some of the many uses for Energy Psychology Techniques include treating phobias, anxiety, depression, trauma, limiting beliefs, compulsive behaviors and addictions. So keep your eyes and ears open…you’ll be hearing lots more about Energy Psychology!
